UASB Pilot Plant for
Tannery Waste Water at Kanpur
Description of the Project:
Within the
Indo-Dutch Environmental & Sanitary Engineering Project, under
the Ganga Action Plan, another sewage treatment plant based on
UASB technology was designed & constructed after the
successful performance and results of 5 MLD UASB STP at Jajmau,
Kanpur, a full scale 36 MLD wastewater treatment plant was
designed & constructed for mixed wastewater (tannery effluents
& domestic).
This plant is
receiving flow from tanneries & residential area of Jajmau.
The tannery wastewater stream is 9 MLD whereas domestic flow
is 27 MLD. Initially the tannery wastewater is collected in
the equalisation tank and then mixed with domestic wastewater
in the mixing tank. There are two UASB reactors each with a
capacity of 1800 m3. After UASB reactors, the effluent is
further treated in post-treatment unit of the plant.
The biogas
produced is being utilised for power generation by installing
pure gas engines. The H2S content in the biogas is removed in
the H2S scrubbers before it enters the engines.
Another plant of
14 MLD capacity (14,000 m3/d) for a population of 1.25 lakhs
was designed and constructed at Mirzapur. Mirzapur is a medium
size town of Uttar Pradesh which is famous for carpet &
brassware cottage industries.
The sewage
generated from the town is being pumped & conveyed to the
inlet chamber of the STP. The STP is based on UASB technology.
There are two UASB reactors each with a capacity of 700 m3. In
the UASB reactors the reduction in COD upto 80% takes place.
After UASB reactors, the treated effluent enters the polishing
pond for further removal of pollution load in order to meet
the GAP discharge standards. The biogas generated is being
converted into electrical energy by installing dual fuel
engines. The electricity requirements of the plant is met by
in-house power generation.
14 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)
based on UASB technology at Mirzapur, India.
