Description of
the Project:
The city of Ras Al Khaimah has
grown enormously and there is no sewerage or sewage treatment
system for residential areas within Ras Al Khaimah. Sewage is
generally directed to poorly maintained soakways, which
discharges approx. 24,800 m3 of sewage into the ground every
day. This leads to groundwater contamination, which is not
environment friendly. The environmental conditions in the most
congested areas turn worse, especially during rainy period,
wherein water logging takes place and pollution overflows
leading to serious health problems. The problems will escalate
further as the city grows. At present less than 4% of the
waste is removed by tankers.
PWSD, RAK proposed that to handle
the wastewater generated from the spread out localities and
developments, there is an imperative need to develop an
extensive sewerage network and sewage treatment systems. PWSD
initiated the process and in September 2000 a master plan was
prepared for the collection, conveyance and treatment of
sewage for the total population of Ras Al Khaimah. The
objectives of the plan were to provide immediate solutions to
the short-term environmental problems and ensure that the
solution will be compatible with long-term development. Within
this purview, PWSD, RAK requested IRAMCONSULT, Washington
DC, USA in July, 2001 to prepare the Detailed Design and
Engineering details of the Integrated Sewerage System and
Sewage Treatment Plant, as conceived in the master plan with
necessary modifications.
It is proposed to construct a
sewage treatment plant and the sewerage network in a time
frame of 4-6 years to deal with the wastewater of the city.
The PWSD proposes to prioritize the construction of the
sewerage system based on the priority of the areas vis-à-vis
the population, economic growth, current environmental
conditions, etc.
